Discover this sweet Italian festivity

“L’Epifania tutte le feste porta via”is an Italian saying meaning: “With the Epiphany, all the holidays are over”.

The Epiphany, or day of the “Befana”, is celebrated each year in Italy on the 6th of January, marking the end of the winter holidays which began on Christmas. The 6th of January is usually also the last day of vacation from school for the kids.

As many celebrations in Italy, this too has religious origins: on the 12th day after his birth, Baby Jesus was visited by the Three Wise Men who brought him gold, incense, and myrrh as a gift.

What gave wider popularity to this holiday though, is the Befana, an old lady who flys on a broomstick and on the night between January 5 and 6 fills with sweet presents the socks of every child.

The Befana is not good with everybody: only good children will get candies and chocolate, bad kids will get coal (even though she likes to play tricks on kids and sometimes she will hide black sugar that looks like coal in the socks of good kids too!)

The Epiphany is a very sweet festivity and we have just what it takes to add a touch of Italy to any size of stocking in your family!
